Waterproofing a shower must be addressed from before any tile can be laid because without a properly waterproofed shower, the whole installation becomes susceptible to leaks that can result in structural damage and mold. Schluter Kerdi is an easy-to-use sheet applied waterproofing membrane. The pliable Schluter Kerdi membrane is made of a soft polyethylene core that can be anchored into thin-set mortar with the special polypropylene fleece webbing that covers both sides. Designed to be used in conjunction with natural stone, ceramic, and porcelain tile coverings, Schluter Kerdi Waterpoofing Membrane can be used to waterproof shower floors and walls, tub surrounds, and other areas or applications that require waterproofing. To avoid air bubbles, work the Schluter Kerdi Membrane into the mortar with the flat side of the trowel (held at angle) and using smooth, diagonal movements. It is imperative to all air bubbles are worked out for proper bond. All seams, corners, and connections must be also be addressed for the installation to be waterproof. For seams, the edges of the Kerdi Membrane can be overlapped by 2″ and adhered with unmodified thinset. Schluter Kerdi-Band (installed with unmodified thinset) can also be used to cover the joints created by adjoining edges of the Kerdi Membrane together.
