Listed today we have these Vintage Trim cove base tiles…in a vintage matte finish #76 Sage Gray New Old Stock made by the American Olean Tile Companies.This cove base tile has a finished corner with a light glazed flat top, stack tile on top or leave. These tiles do not have self spacing lugs & will need to be hand spaced as needed.These tiles were made in the1950’s -1970’sthese are made for a mastic type installation. tile is flat just like wall tiles Measures 6″ long; 6-7/16″ with finished end and 2-7/8″ tall. There is a misprint on the tile…should read 6-7/16″ not 6-5/8″ This ceramic tile has been stored in a New York warehouse for 50+ years; Remember these are vintage glazing to an earlier time so they come with minor manufacturing flaw which gives it an authentic vintage look. Interesting ReadingThe American Encaustic Tiling Co. (AET) formed in 1875 with first plant in Zanesville OH, They greatly expanded to include plants in Perth Amboy NJ, Hermosa Beach CA & Vernon CA by buying defunct tile manufacturers. The Depression hit hard and unlike GMB, they did not expand their product line into other ceramic items like Dinnerware, Pottery, etc. They went into bankruptcy in 1933 and the US Bankruptcy court assigned Malcolm Schweiker of Franklin Tile of Lansdale PA as trustee to sell off assets. Mr. Schweiker bought the NJ plant and assumed the stock market exchange name AET which was valuable. He continued to use the name for some time and later, after purchased Olean Tile Co. and American Tile Co. he changed the company name to American Olean. AET owned the trademark HERMOSA and when GMB purchased the Hermosa Beach plant, they continued to use the Hermosa name on their tiles until about 1962 when they merged with Lock Joint Pipe Co to form Int’l Pipe & Ceramics Corp and later began to use the trademark Interpace.
